Screen Time for Kids: How Much Is Too Much
By KarshieKids Education Team July 9, 2026 5 min read
Treating all screen time the same is like treating all food the same — broccoli and candy both have calories, but they're not the same.
AAP Recommendations by Age
- Under 18 months: No screen time (except video chatting)
- 18–24 months: Only high-quality educational content, watched with a parent
- Ages 2–5: No more than 1 hour per day of high-quality programming
- Ages 6+: Consistent limits for sleep, physical activity, and schoolwork
Educational vs. Passive Screen Time
Passive screen time (watching videos, scrolling): Low engagement, can interfere with sleep and attention.
Educational screen time (interactive learning apps): High engagement, builds skills, can improve academic outcomes.
How to Set Healthy Limits
- Quality over quantity — 30 min of interactive learning > 2 hours of videos
- Set a daily limit — KarshieKids' built-in timer (default: 30 min/day)
- Create screen-free zones — No screens at meals or in bedrooms
- Be present — Co-view and co-play when possible
KarshieKids Screen Time Controls
- Daily time limits per child (default 30 min, up to 60 min)
- Study hours — restrict access to specific times
- Bedtime lock — blocks access after a set hour
- Weekly reports — see exactly how time was spent
