The Complete Parent Guide to Reading at Home: PreK to Grade 3

Reading is the single most important skill your child will learn. Here's a stage-by-stage guide.

PreK (Ages 3–4): Build Phonemic Awareness

Before letters, children need to hear and play with sounds. Read aloud every day, play rhyming games, clap syllables in names, sing nursery rhymes.

Kindergarten: Sight Words + CVC Words

Children learn letter sounds and start blending them into CVC words (cat, dog, sit). Key milestones: know all 26 letter sounds, blend 3-letter words, read 20+ sight words.

Grade 1: Decodable Books Strategy

First grade is where reading "clicks" for most children. Focus shifts from learning to read to reading to learn. Read decodable books 10-15 minutes daily.

Grade 2: Reading Fluency (90 WPM Goal)

Fluency means reading smoothly, accurately, and with expression. The goal for end of Grade 2 is 90 words per minute.

Grade 3: Comprehension Strategies

Third grade is the "inflection point." Identify main idea and key details, make inferences, compare two texts, use text evidence.

Read aloud to your child every day, even after they can read independently. 15 minutes a day. That's it.
