Growth Mindset for Kids: How to Raise a Child Who Loves Learning
"You're so smart!" seems like a great thing to say. But research shows it might actually hold them back. Here's why.
Fixed Mindset vs. Growth Mindset
Fixed mindset: Intelligence is fixed. You're either smart or not. Success means proving you're smart. Growth mindset: Intelligence grows with effort. You can get better at anything with practice.
Children with a growth mindset embrace challenges, persist through difficulty, see effort as the path to mastery, and learn from criticism.
What NOT to Say
❌ "You're so smart!"
This tells your child success comes from being smart, not from effort. When they face something hard, they'll think "I must not be smart enough."
❌ "Math just isn't your thing."
Labeling a child gives them permission to stop trying. No one is born bad at math — they just haven't practiced enough.
What TO Say Instead
✅ "I love how hard you worked on that!"
Praise the effort, not the outcome.
✅ "That was a tough one — and you didn't give up!"
Acknowledge difficulty and celebrate resilience.
✅ "What strategy did you use?"
Focus on the process.
✅ "Mistakes help your brain grow!"
Normalize mistakes. The brain forms new neural pathways when we struggle and then succeed.
✅ "You can't do this... yet."
The word "yet" transforms a fixed statement into a growth statement.
